What Makes a Used Car Sell?

car keys with ribbonSelling a car, new or used, might seem like a guessing game to you. For instance, how do you know at what price to sell your used car? Or, how does the car salesman know how much to offer you for your trade-in when you purchase a new car? On the outside, it might seem like they’re pulling the numbers straight out of the air.

The price for your car, however, is always calculated. There are aspects of your car which increase the value; knowing what they are and what car buyers look for can help increase the value of your car when it’s time to part ways.

Especially when it comes down to used cars, car buyers don’t want to think about maintenance, so the more you take care ahead of time, the better you’ll be when it comes time to sell. Just make sure when you’re in the process to keep track of your receipts! When it comes time to brag about the new parts you just invested in your vehicle, you need to be able to back it up with evidence.

Here is a list of just a few minor parts of your car you can invest in now to greatly increase your car’s value when it comes time to trade-in.

  1. Lights: Dim lights or foggy light covers make a car look old and out of shape. A screwdriver, inexpensive bulbs and some manual labor can really help your car’s appeal when someone takes a look.
  2. Windows: Broken windows that no longer go up and down can be a huge turn-off for potential buyers; if someone likes your car but it has broken windows, it’s much easier for that buyer to find a car that they also like with working windows and forget all about you. Minor chips, scrapes and dents in windows should also be fixed ahead of time. They’re relatively cheap to repair, and it’ll cost much less than what the buyer will take off the asking price for having to do it themselves.
  3. Tires: Tires are almost always inspected upon purchasing a car because they’re informative as to the wear and tear of the car. If your tires are in bad shape, people will think your car is in bad shape, too. Get some used tires in better condition than your current ones to save yourself from haggling as much as $900 for tires when talking with a buyer. If you’re trying to sell a high-end vehicle, be prepared to buy new tires.
